Illusion

A thought unspoken, a word unsaid.
A promise unbroken and yet never kept.

Gazing at the rain through an amber glass,
The desert I see, bereft and sparse.

A mind that's broken, a soul unprepared.
A conscience unscarred, delusions of a spirit repaired.

A smoky haze so thick, the wind can't push it away
Voices, once crisp and clear, now raspy whispers and rustling of leaves.

A throaty laugh, a childish giggle,
A siren's voice, a decision oh so fickle.

White powder falls on glass, obscuring what lies beyond
Prophecies of events to come, Memories of fantasies unbound.

A nightmare come alive, reality it claims to be
In the dead of night, in the light of day, an apparition haunting me

A face in the vapours and flames, as I chase the dragon deeper into darkness,
The chimaera takes control, the shining knight I couldn't be.

The sounds of a beating drum, the feel of the strings I thrum,
The stench of sweat, the taste of metal, a sight I cannot trust.

The green fairy comes when I call, despite the bitter price she brings along
Lauding her with sugary praise and louche promises, yet her wings I fail to clip.

I realise that there are a lot of things in this that are more than a little obscure. I will publish an explanantion for this soon. In the meanwhile, use Wikipedia. :-)
I'm sure Wren and Furibundo have already figured most of it out.

@Sidu/Kai Wren - Choose one ID, man. :-) And what on earth is a rowdy sheeter?

@Rize - I know you didn't. I came across most of the terms and activities for the first time while I was researching the topic.

@Furibundo - You have no idea how close you just came to the answer. :-)

A thought unspoken, a word unsaid.
A promise unbroken and yet never kept.

Pretty simple for the most part. An unspoken promise - hence you can't keep it or break it, even if you feel you've done it one way or another.

Gazing at the rain through an amber glass,
The desert I see, bereft and sparse.

Drinking whisky (amber glass) in a crowded bar filled with people (drops of rain water) and yet alone with the drink, imagining the place to be deserted, bereft and sparse, of life

A mind that's broken, a soul unprepared.
A conscience unscarred, delusions of a spirit repaired.

A person is driven to substance abuse due to certain trying circumstances. One is completely unprepared for what happens under its influence and is unaware of its effects.
It gives one the impression that everything is alright

A smoky haze so thick, the wind can't push it away
Voices, once crisp and clear, now raspy whispers and rustling of leaves.

Referring the use of hash/marijuana. Smoke that clouds the mind, even wind can't push it away,
The voices become rough and inconsequential (like the wind through the trees). Tying the wind into the voices with the rustling of leaves

A throaty laugh, a childish giggle,
A siren's voice, a decision oh so fickle.

All the things one imagines in an inebriated - delusions of happiness. The fickle decision is the one to stop doing it. Everytime one stops, one starts again.

White powder falls on glass, obscuring what lies beyond
Prophecies of events to come, Memories of fantasies unbound.

Cocaine is generally snorted from atop a piece of glass or more often, a piece of a mirror. One does not want to see oneself while commiting a dastardly deed, hence the obscuring of the reflection.
While under the influence, the things to which one is witness, wishes and dreams come alive.

A nightmare come alive, reality it claims to be
In the dead of night, in the light of day, an apparition haunting me

For an addict, reality is a nightmare, a ghost haunting him.

A face in the vapours and flames, as I chase the dragon deeper into darkness,
The chimaera takes control, the shining knight I couldn't be.

Double meaning - The face of a loved one to be seen just before death or while getting high
Chasing the dragon refers to a way of inhaling the vapours of a boiling heroin solution or the literal meaning of chasing a monster/fear into darkness
Chimaera is a monster from greek myth, it is also a synonym for a dream, or more accurately, a nightmare. The dream takes control and see the courageous person one wants to be but can't or won't.

The sounds of a beating drum, the feel of the strings I thrum,
The stench of sweat, the taste of metal, a sight I cannot trust.

The places where people congregrate to do drugs, I suppose I based it on the description I had read of a crack house, having no other information to go by.
It isn't uncommon to have music playing in such places (drum, strings), sweat of the people there, the taste of blood (blisters due to heat from inhaling the heroin vapours). Illusion (the sight I cannot trust, :-) )

The green fairy comes when I call, despite the bitter price she brings along
Lauding her with sugary praise and louche promises, yet her wings I fail to clip.

Green Fairy refers to a strong and bitter (bitter price) alcoholic drink called Absinthe
A few people mix Laudanum with absinthe, which as one can imagine is highly potent.
The prefered method of absinthe consumption is to mix it with sugar (sugary praises) and ice cold water. This causes the solution to become cloudy, a process called louching.
It doesn't matter how much one drinks or takes, the effect is temporary (her wings I could not clip).

Ok, I hope that makes things clear. I've put in most of my research as links in the comment. Hope that will clear any doubts that I haven't addressed.
Enjoy. :-)

- A rowdy sheeter is a person of friendly nature who gets along well with the police.
- And stop it already with the complicated explanations you AGT raja. It does not impress the women, I assure you once more.
